How selling gold works in the UAE

When you sell, a jeweller pays its own buying price, not the retail rate shown on this site. The buying price is usually a few dirhams per gram lower, and you never get the making charge back.

The shop will test purity and weigh the gold. Bring your ID and, if you have it, the original invoice. Larger shops may give a better price for heavier pieces or 24K bars.

  1. Check today’s rate for your karat below.
  2. Ask two or three shops for their buying price per gram.
  3. Compare offers against today’s rate with the estimator.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Dubai jeweller buy my gold at the rate shown here?
Usually not. Jewellers pay their own buying price, which is below the retail rate. Use the rate here as a reference when comparing offers.
Can I exchange old gold for new jewellery?
Yes, many shops offer exchange. The old gold is valued at their buying price and set against the new piece, which still includes making charges and 5% VAT.
Do I need ID to sell gold in the UAE?
Yes. Shops record seller ID under UAE anti-money-laundering rules.

What affects the price you get

  • Karat and weight: the shop pays for gold content, so higher karats and heavier pieces are worth more.
  • The shop’s buying price: usually a few dirhams per gram below the retail rate.
  • Making charges: never refunded. A piece bought last month with a high making charge will sell for much less than its purchase price.
  • Stones: diamonds and gems are often valued separately or not at all.
  • Condition and paperwork: a tax invoice from a known shop can help; bars with certificates sell more easily.

Selling vs exchanging

If you plan to buy new jewellery, exchanging can be better value than selling for cash, because some shops offer a higher rate on old gold used against a new purchase. Remember the new piece still carries making charges and 5% VAT.

A worked example

You sell 20 g of 22K jewellery. Today’s 22K retail rate is AED 465.50 per gram, so the gold value at that rate is about AED 9,310. If the shop’s buying price is 3% lower, you would receive roughly AED 9,031.

Where to sell gold in Dubai

Jewellers in the Gold Souk and in malls buy gold, as do bullion dealers for bars and coins. Get two or three quotes, ask how the price was worked out, and sell only to licensed businesses that ask for your ID.
