Buying gold in Dubai to take to India

The Dubai rate is often lower than India’s because India applies customs duty and GST on gold. Before buying, check the current Indian customs allowance and duty rules for your stay abroad, and keep the tax invoice.

The UAE charges 5% VAT on jewellery, which tourists can claim back on departure through the Tourist Refund Scheme. Making charges vary by design.

Exchange rates update a few times a day and may differ from your bank or exchange house.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 22K gold rate in Dubai today in Indian rupees?
About INR 120,557 per 10 grams, converted from the Dubai retail rate at today’s exchange rate.
Is gold cheaper in Dubai than in India?
The per-gram rate is usually lower in Dubai, mainly because of Indian import duty and GST. Your final saving depends on making charges, VAT refunds and Indian customs rules.

How the INR price is calculated

We take the Dubai retail rate in dirhams and convert it at the day’s AED to INR exchange rate, shown under the table above. Your bank, exchange house or card provider will use its own rate, often with a margin, so the rupee amount you actually pay can differ.

Comparing Dubai and Indian gold prices fairly

  1. Compare the same karat: 22K in Dubai with 22K (916) in India.
  2. Compare the same unit: per 10 grams is the usual Indian quote. Today 22K in Dubai is about INR 120,557 per 10 g.
  3. Add the costs on each side: making charges, the UAE’s 5% VAT on jewellery (refundable for tourists), and in India, customs duty if you bring gold in above your allowance, plus GST on purchases made in India.
  4. Hallmarking rules differ. Buyers in India often look for BIS hallmarking on pieces bought there.

Tips for Indian buyers in the UAE

  • Keep the tax invoice: Indian customs may ask for proof of purchase.
  • Check the current Indian baggage allowance and duty on gold for your length of stay abroad before you buy.
  • Many Indian jewellery chains in Dubai sell the same designs as in India, so you can compare making charges directly.
