Metal value at the international spot price. Shops add a premium that depends on bar size and brand, usually higher for small bars.
How bar prices work in the UAE
Gold bars are priced at the international spot price plus a premium for refining, minting and the dealer’s margin. Small bars (1 g to 10 g) carry a much higher premium per gram than 100 g or 1 kg bars.
Popular sizes in Dubai include 10 g, 1 tola, 10 tola, 100 g and 1 kg. Always ask for an assay certificate and a tax invoice.
VAT on gold bars
In the UAE, investment gold of 99% purity or more can be zero-rated for VAT, subject to Federal Tax Authority conditions. Jewellery is charged 5% VAT. Confirm the VAT treatment with your dealer before you buy.

Choosing a gold bar size
| Size | Good for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1 g to 10 g | Gifts, small regular savings | Highest premium per gram |
| 1 tola / 10 tola | South Asian buyers, easy resale | Widely traded in the UAE |
| 1 oz / 50 g / 100 g | Medium investment | Lower premium per gram |
| 1 kg | Large investment | Lowest premium; needs secure storage |
Bars vs jewellery as an investment
Bars and coins are priced close to the gold value, so less of your money goes on workmanship. Jewellery includes making charges that you do not get back when you sell. If your main goal is to hold gold, bars and coins are usually the more efficient choice. We do not give investment advice; this is how the pricing works.
Buying gold bars safely in the UAE
- Buy from licensed dealers, banks or established jewellers.
- Check that the refiner’s name, weight, purity (999.9) and serial number are stamped on the bar and match the certificate.
- Keep the tax invoice and certificate together; they make resale easier.
- Store bars securely, for example in a bank safe deposit box.
Selling gold bars
Dealers usually buy back bars in good condition close to the spot value, minus a small spread. Bars that are damaged or have lost their packaging and certificate may need testing, which can lower the price.
