Gold value—
Estimated jewellery price—

Estimate only, not a shop quote. Jewellers set their own prices.

How the calculator works

  1. Gold value = weight in grams × rate per gram.
  2. Making charge = weight × making charge per gram.
  3. VAT = 5% of gold value plus making charge (jewellery).

The rate is filled in with today’s estimated Dubai retail rate for the karat you choose. If a shop quotes a different rate, type it in.

Gold bars and coins of 99% purity can be zero-rated for VAT. Untick VAT for those.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the price of gold jewellery in Dubai?
Multiply the weight by the rate for its karat, add the making charge, then add 5% VAT on the total.
What is a normal making charge in Dubai?
It depends on the design and the shop. Simple chains have low making charges, while detailed or branded pieces cost much more. Always ask for the making charge per gram.

Understanding making charges

The making charge pays for the design and workmanship. Shops may quote it per gram or as a percentage of the gold value. Simple machine-made chains have low making charges; handmade, detailed or branded pieces cost more. The charge is often negotiable, especially in the Gold Souk, and many shops reduce it during festivals and the Dubai Shopping Festival.

VAT on gold in the UAE

  • Jewellery: 5% VAT on the gold value and the making charge.
  • Investment gold (99% purity or more, bars and coins): can be zero-rated, subject to Federal Tax Authority conditions.
  • Tourists can reclaim VAT on eligible purchases through the Tourist Refund Scheme when leaving the UAE.

Worked example: 22K bangle

A 10 g 22K bangle with a making charge of AED 20 per gram costs about:

ItemAmount (AED)
Gold value (10 g × AED 465.50)4,655.00
Making charge (AED 20 per gram)200.00
VAT at 5%242.75
Estimated total5,097.75

Tips for using the calculator

  1. Units: switch to tola or troy ounce if your piece or bar is quoted that way.
  2. If a shop quotes its own rate, type it in the rate box.
  3. Untick VAT for investment bars and coins.
  4. For selling, use the selling estimator and enter the shop’s deduction.
