How We Calculate Gold Prices
Our data sources, formulas, update times and limitations.
1. International spot price
We take the live international gold price in US dollars per troy ounce from Gold API, checked every 5 minutes. Today it is USD 4,166.10 per ounce (updated 17 Oct 2026, 5:25 AM GST).
2. Conversion to dirhams per gram
The UAE dirham is pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725. We convert as follows:
AED per gram (pure) = USD per ounce × 3.6725 ÷ 31.1035
We then multiply by purity: 24K = 99.9%, 22K = 91.6%, 21K = 87.5%, 18K = 75%, 14K = 58.5%. This gives the spot value shown in our tables.
3. Dubai retail rate
Shops in the UAE follow a retail reference rate published by the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group several times on working days. It is usually 2–4% above the spot value, and the gap is a little larger for lower karats.
Unless a published rate has been entered for the day, the rate we show is an estimate: spot value plus a typical retail premium (+2.3% for 24K, +3.3% for 22K today), rounded to the nearest AED 0.25. It is labelled “est.” wherever it appears.
4. Other currencies
INR, PKR and other currencies use daily exchange rates. Rates By Exchange Rate API. Your bank or exchange house will use its own rates.
5. Units
- 1 tola = 11.6638 g
- 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 g
- 1 kilogram = 1,000 g
6. Updates and errors
Times are shown in Gulf Standard Time (GST, UTC+4). If a new price differs from the last one by more than 8%, we hold it until it is confirmed. If our source is unavailable, we show the last confirmed price with its time, and never label it as live. The gold market is closed at weekends, when we show the last price.
7. What our prices do not include
Making charges, 5% VAT on jewellery, shop discounts and the price a jeweller will pay when you sell. Our figures are reference prices, not quotes.
Prices are for information only and may differ from in-store prices. Not investment advice. Dhahab Today is independent and not affiliated with the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group or any jeweller.
